Dr. Nazam Dzolkarnaini


Visiting Lecturer in Islamic Economics and Finance

Dr Dzolkarnaini contributes to the teaching of modules and sessions related to Islamic economics and Finance, particularly those of Islamic accounting and auditing, at Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education. He  is an Associate Professor in Accounting & Finance at Edinburgh Napier University. Before joining academia, he was an accountant in a foreign public listed company where he was involved in financial reporting, the financial management information system and internal control aspects of the business. He also had experience in investment and financial planning during his engagement as a consultant within several financial institutions. He qualified as an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) with the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) licensee of the CFP Board of Standard Inc., USA. He is also a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy.

His PhD study on Determinants of the Use of Debt and Leasing in UK Corporate Financing Decisions was jointly funded by the University of Stirling and the Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORSAS).

He is currently working on several research projects in the areas of capital structure, corporate governance and Islamic finance. He was made the Vice-Chancellor’s Early Career Research scholar in 2009. He currently supervises several doctoral students in the areas of Islamic financial planning and Islamic microtakaful. He sits on the Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal of Excellence in Islamic Banking and Finance. He is also an ad-hoc reviewer for several journals, books and conference papers.

He is currently an external examiner for BA Business/Business & Finance/Accounting portfolio at Swansea Metropolitan University of Wales Trinity St David.
